What is the best Blu Ray player to buy?

What is the best money can buy for up to $400 for a Blu-ray player?

  • I'm looking for Blu-Ray player with BD Live and a connection for Sirius or XM. I really like to get one that is a recorder IF it's worth it. I am also looking for one that can upscale DVD's running a 5.1 channel digital or analog outputs. Thanks.

  • Answer:

I agree with MTS, the Oppo BDP-80 is an outstanding universal player, it has 7.1 channel outputs so if your receiver won't decode the new HD audio formats, the Oppo will. I don't believe there are any recorders out yet - except for a computer connected drive. As far as a Sirius/XM connection an AV receiver would have those, not a stand alone blu-ray player.

Even though it's only $299 the PS3 actually is a very highly rated bluray player. Just as good as any midrange sony, panasonic, etc.

I tried two different stand alone (blu-ray only) players, a Samsung and a Sony before returning both and settling on a PS3. For years CNET recommended the PS3 as the blu-ray player of choice and now that the price has been dropped to $299 I think most people will have a hard time justifying a stand alone player purchase over a PS3. The remote control response time is noticeably faster than with the other players I tried out, the overall software navigation smoother and interestingly while neither of the first two players were able to access English subtitles on a Canadian import blu-ray I have, the PS3 played them without any difficulty.

Hey Bud how are you? I was thinking the same as Jerry. My grand son's PS3 plays the blu-ray. The rest of what you want I don't have a clue.

LG or samsung they have a really great set up with BD live youtube pandora netflix and vudu HD movies on demand but then most player have all that now one thing I would recommend is get the same brand as your tv or one that is CEC compatible so that one remote can operate try the samsung BDP4600 or 3600 if not the LG BD570 or 590
