I want to build a custom home theater system using car audio. What do i need?
-
I want major bass. I want something to rattle the house. I will use the output from my tv for any amps. My real problem is the power converter. I know car amps need a lot of power.

Everyone here has been giving you mean answers, so I figure instead of telling you what you should do instead, I'm going to tell you how to actually do this. It is possible, and of course a real home audio set-up would be much better, but this is what you want to know, so I'll tell you. Now, I'm making some assumptions here like that you have all the speakers you want to hook up, some wires and cables, the amps, speaker boxes for your subs and speakers, and any crossovers you may need for your speakers if they're two or three way speakers. You seem to know what you're doing as far as hooking up a car audio system goes, so I'll leave all of that up to you, what it comes down to now is the last step -- hooking up the power and ground. Depending on your amps, you're going to be using a lot of wattage to using an extreme amount of wattage. This will make your electrical bill go up considerably. The best thing I can think of would be to get a powerful converter such as the Kendrick Astro Instruments 120V,10 amp Power supply which converts 120VAC to 12VDC with a 10 amp output. You'll then want to hook that up to your amplifiers. You'll also have to figure something out as far as a remote turn-on for your amps. I'm actually not fully sure of how those work, I'm not sure if your car's head unit sends a constant stream of electricity to the amps to let them know to stay on or if it's more like a quick jolt to say "hey, turn on!" You may want to consult your amps' manufacturer(s). This system is not by any means recommended by the FCC, but what the hell do they know, right? Have fun shaking the walls!

Why don't you go with pro audio gear. It'll probably be cheaper in the long run... http://www.musiciansfriend.com/product/Mackie-SWA1801-18-Subwoofer-System?sku=605262 http://www.musiciansfriend.com/product/Mackie-HR824-Studio-Monitor?sku=605250

Go to these .coms crutchfield....uscaraudio ...subwooferscatalog...and maybe u can hit a sale jackpot or refurbished items that are nearly brand new. With the right car amps coupled with the right car subs...your house will rattle to the ground. On the other hand, why not elevate your interest to Home Theater System...this would really rock the foundation of your garage...with probably the same $$$ spent.

Looking at how you phrased your question, looks like you want to power the subs with a car amplifier. Good luck trying to power that thing. Your best bet is to buy a separate professional type of amp and power your subs off of that. Just be careful to watch your impedence. Home systems and car systems are different. Mixing and matching can cause problems in the end. Also, car subs aren't really tuned for home theater. A home theater sub will sound much better, but if you're just looking for noise then car subs will do the job.

it will sound like **** man dont waste your money. Just get a home theatre system that designed for homes and u can add multiple subs to rattle your house. But car speakers wont do the job in a typical room.

First, it will not sound the same, the acoustics in a room re way different than your car, plus where you sit in the room plays important factor on how it sounds. If you still wanna try you will need a power converter......go to home depot or lowes and tell them you want to go from an outlet in your house to a 12V source liek your car battery. You still need a home theatre reciever.......
