I'm looking to buy an HDTV, and I've narrowed my choices down to the following three options: Samsung HL-S5086W 50" DLP rear projection TV. price: $1160 Sony KDF-50E2000 50" 3LCD rear projection TV. price: $1300 Sony KDS-50A2000 50" XSRD 1080p rear projection TV. price: $1700 Which option do you think is a better value?

Answer:
I just bought the KDS-50A2000 and I am very pleased. There may be a few downsides, like the bulbs burning out. They cost around 250$ dollars to replace but it is easily done. Simply remove a cover in the backside of the television and change the bulb. I was told by the guy at best buy to expect them to burn out anywhere between 5-7 years. Rainbow effects will not happen with this TV as I had read. But, the extra money you are paying for comes mainly from the resolution (1080p). So if you don't have a PS3, or any kind of High Def DVD player(blue-ray/HD-DVD) i wouldn't bother. This set is extremely bright and the contrast ratio is pretty good (10,000:1) Blacks look deep and inky. HD picture is extremely amazing and SD picture is pretty good. The amount of calibration settings that can be done is pretty high also. I would also recommend picking up one of the two following DVD's. 1- AVIA Guide to home theater. 2- Digital Video Essentials. These DVD's run audio and video tests on your set and allow you to adjust the picture, sharpness, color, and other settings to display the perfect picture. When you veiw a television in-store, most are set on the "torch" mode which increase the contrast and brightness to the fullest to attract viewers, but when calibrated with the help of the following DVD's, your picture could look more lifelike and provide some of the best detail possible. I Love this T.V. and i would say buy it, but i would also review others and make the decesion based the source of your viewing material, 720p, 1080i, 1080p, High Def, Standard Def, etc etc.

when I was looking at HDTV's I found that DLP was the best way to go. Superb quality, contrast, sharpness & clarity. My samsung 50" dlp is going on 2 years old and still works great!

I've got the Samsung 57in DLP and it is awesome.....I had one problem with it automatically turning off after about 2-3 hours. The teck rep came out and changed the whole guts of the thing and advised me that the bulb will last twice as long if you use the standard picture setting instead of the brilliant setting. Also the color wheel might have to be replaced in 3-4 years so he recommended an extended warrentee...I then bought a samsung theater in a box q85 series and the freakin thing is better than going to the movies.....no obnoxious people around you....except for my kids...hahaha just kidding.....

you most def need to go with one of the sonys. i'd say the 1300 one whatever you get from sony is going to be very good quality

The Sony 50A2000 will have the best picture, but there are potential problems with that series. It would be better to get the latest SXRD model from Sony (XBR2 series--but they start at 60"). Second best would be the Samsung, but make sure you don't see "rainbows". (Scan your eyes rapidy across the screen with a bright object in the picture--you may see a trail of colors, and you might not like that.) A better DLP choice would be Mitsubishi or HP (but all DLP may show the rainbows).

NONE OF THE ABOVE!!!!! DON'T WASTE YOUR MONEY....GET A FRONT HD PROJECTOR. Panasonic AX100U. YOU WILL NEVER REGRET IT!! I have a 133" Diagonal. screen. Take the 50" Sony and make the picture 133". That's what it looks like!! Also hooked up to an XBOX 360 With High Definition DVD Drive. Everything looks like your sitting at the theater...IN TOTAL HIGH DEFINITION. Read the link look up the AX900U.

I would go with the Sony 50" 3LCD for $1300.00 I have a 42" Sony HDTV LCD Grand Wega, and it's got a good picture both on Digital channels & HD ones, because of the interface technology that filters both signals to give you the picture on each. DLP has issues with colors being way too intense, making it look artificial, instead of natural looking.
