How is Blue Ray different from HD DVD?

How come HD DVD has a comined format with DVD, but Blu-ray doesn't?

  • I have a blu-ray player but want to be able to play my dvds other places than my living room so I debated getting a blu-ray disc or a regular DVD. The movie came in blu-ray disc or HD DVD format with a regular DVD on the flip side of the disc (combined format). How come Blu-ray doesn't come like that if they are competeing formats?

  • Answer:

HD-DVD was designed and created by the DVD forum, the same group that owned the DVD format. Because of this, they can create discs like that. Blu Ray was created by Sony, and has a different set of companies behind it. Due to this, they do not have, and apparently did not seek, permission to make a dual disc.

Hi not all HD-DVD has the combo format DVD. I have "300" & Jet Li "Fearless" on both combo formats. It is movie studio company's they do not want to pay more for the combo disk. That's why the HD-DVD movie disk they cost $4.00 more then the blu-ray movie disk.
