Can I connect my PS3 to this surround sound system?

How do i connect my PS3 to my sony surround sound system?

  • Is my only option to use an optical cable? I currently have the amp connected to the TV with HDMI and the PS3 is connected to the TV with HDMI. I cannot seem to get surround sound this way without having extra speaker wires connected to the amp and TV with limited power to the surround system.

  • Answer:

If you want surround sound you must use either the HDMI or optical out from the PS3. If you want to use HDMI I would go first to the amp or A/V receiver (sound and video) and then from the amp/receiver (via a second cable) to the HDTV (this is for video only, although it may carry sound that the TV will play through its speakers). If you go direct to the HDTV from the PS3 via HDMI (as you are right now) you need to get audio to the amp/receiver ... so you must either use optical from PS3 to the amp/receiver or (if you have a suitable output ... HDMI or optical/digital coax) bring audio back from the HDTV to the amp/receiver. The second option is unlikely and not ideal anyway. Hope that helps.
