Difference between BluRay and DVD?

  • What is the difference between BluRay and DVD? I have systems that can run both and I was just wondering what the difference was and what one is better. Thanx

  • Answer:

You must have a Blu-ray player ... which will play Blu-ray disks and DVDs (and other formats too, although specifics vary). To benefit from Blu-ray you need a minimum of an HDTV (1080p is optimum) and a good sound system. There are all sorts of technical differences (e.g. greater storage capacity on Blu-ray, thinner coating over the info tracks, they use a blue-violet laser vs red) but disks are the same size and look very similar. Commercial packaging is different so you can tell it's a Blu-ray or DVD. Blu-ray is 1920x1080 resolution, while DVD is 640x480. The menu structure on Blu-ray disks is more advanced than on DVD (for example it''s available during the movie). There are HD sound formats available on Blu-ray not used on DVD. But Blu-ray disks are more expensive than DVD so you must decide quality vs price.

I think the only difference is that "BluRay" is suppose to be higher quality then DVD's.

Bluray discs don't and will never scratch.. Dvd discs scratches easily.. Bluray has a very high definition.. In the future, Bluray will dominate over Dvd, and Dvd will be extinct.. Seriously, I'm not joking, stores will stop selling Dvd..

BluRay is way better, if you have the right TV (HD)

BATMAN

Blu-ray Disc is twice as clear as current Hi-Def broadcasts while DVD is only half as clear as current HD broadcasts. Even on older televisions, this increase in picture quality is notible. The same way your MP3s don't sound quite as clear as your CD collection, DVDs don't sound as clear as the audio on most Blu-ray Discs. You can hear the improvement in sound quality on any stereo system. (we say "most" because some Hollywood studios are LAZY and instead of remixing the soundtrack for the SUPERIOR sound quality on Blu-ray Disc, they simply import the INFERIOR soundtrack from the old DVD release to save money)

A/V Truths

blu ray is a million times better than dvd. blu ray offers the highest amount of resolution at 1080p while dvd only offers a resolution of 480p. the higher the resolution the more detail the picture is giving amazing colors and deep blacks and grays! another plus to blu ray is that it will play and upscale normal dvds making them look better than b4. the price of blu ray players have come down sooooo much. you can get one for under $200! theres a lot more to explain why blu ray is better but you will have to experience blu ray first hand to see what im talking about.
