What kind of speaker system should I buy for my bf's home theater system?
-
My boyfriend's birthday is coming up, and I've actually come up with an idea of what to get him! haha. So his set up is an HD projector hung from the cieling-- its connected to an hdmi splitter which has his computer, cable box, and xbox connected to it. right now he just has these crappy computer speakers hooked up to it that cut in and out. i believe they are plugged right into the projector and work with the cable box and the xbox, but not the computer because the sound from the computer is not HDMI compatible. is there a set up that i could get (i was thinking some kind of surround) that would be able to have all of his stuff plugged in at once and be able to switch between them? im looking to spend around 200 dollars. does anyone have suggestions in that price range? thanks, and sorry if this is confusing.

Actually, you gave a pretty good description of the situation, better than a lot of other questions that have been posted here. Now, the problem is that the hookup as you describe it doesn't have any specifically audio gear in it. So, you'd need not just speakers, but an audio amplifier, as well. In most systems, that means an audio home theater receiver. Your budget is a bit tight for that, but if you can manage $249, you could get an Onkyo HT-S3400 5.1-Channel Home Theater System from Amaz*n. That includes a home theater audio receiver, and a 5.1 speaker set. You will also need some connecting cables, maybe speaker wire, as well (It's not clear how much speaker wire or how good it is, comes with the system). Those can also be gotten on Amaz*n for very low prices. Likely a couple of HDMI cables, and a digital optical cable (That is used to send TV sound to the receiver.). You are also to be commended for thinking of such a present that your b/f would really enjoy.

Hi, I've been installing audio/video systems now for about 15 years. My honest opinion, If he wants to upgrade to a better soulution and your budget is $200.00, get him a gift card to Best Buy and have him put it toward a nice system. Even used gear on e-bay will run more than that, and the stuff that is under 200 is not worth spending your money. Anything cheap is going to be 500-1000. It's a very nice thought but $200 in this market just wont be worth it. Hope that helps
