Is DVR recording on the wrong TV?

Problems recording shows with Direct TV DVR?

  • I just got Direct TV installed with one line going to the bedroom with a standard receiver and two lines going to the living room with a receiver and DVR. It was my understanding when I had it installed that there were two lines running to it so I could watch one program while recording another...however, when I'm watching something and the time comes for a show we have set to record on some other channel, the receiver gives me a notice that a show is about to record so it's changing the channel and then gives me the choice on whether I want it to change the channel and begin recording, or to not change and cancel the record. Anyone know what gives here ? Did I misunderstand this when I had it installed ? If so, why are there 2 cable lines running to the DVR box if I can only have one channel tuned at a time ? Any help would be greatly appreciated as I really don't want to call Direct TV and be put on hold forever and get switched around to 15 different people explaining the same problem over & over again. Thanks y'all....

  • Answer:

Go into the setup for the DVR and make sure it is set up correctly as a DVR. I forget the exact prompts to get there, but I recently had my Directv DVR upgraded to a 1.5 TB disk and when it came back, the setup had been changed so it was behaving exactly as you describe. All I had to do was go into setup and change it back.

Press MENU on the remote. Select SETUP. Select SYSTEM SETUP. Select SATELLITE. On the right hand side, select VIEW SIGNAL STRENGTH. On the lower right, select SIGNAL METERS. Do both tuners have signal? If so, then all is good and you must be trying to record three programs at once. If both do not have signal, then you need a service tech to come out and see why.

Are you scheduled to record more than one show at the same time? If that is the case then your problem is simply that while you *can* record two shows at one time you must be tuned in to watch one of the recording programs as per the way that the machine works. If you are only scheduled to record only one program then you will need to call Direct TV to see if you: 1) have the right DVR, because I believe they offer more than one type of receiver and not all of them are capable of performing in such a fashion 2) have had the equipment properly installed and configured. To my knowledge, there is nothing you can do on your end (with the exception of unplugging and resetting to give that a try) that will change such a configuration.
