How do you get prime TV?

Need help thinking through how to get HD signal on a 2nd tv?

  • I have satellite service through DISH with 1 HD receiver that controls 2 tvs. The main tv in the bonus room is connected to the box. The 2nd tv was an old tube tv that was connected in the bedroom through coaxial cable. Now I have an hdtv that I'm putting in the bedroom. When I hook up the cable to the tv it's not in hd. So the question becomes how can I get an HD signal to the 2nd tv without having to buy another box and pay DISH more money each month. I thought since I was already paying for HD service that it would be easy to get it to the 2nd tv but I'm finding it's not that easy. The HD box doesn't have 2 outputs so I can't run and hdmi cable from the box to the 2nd tv and even if there was 2 outputs the room isn't that easy to run a cable to. Any ideas? DISH is going to charge $100 for a 2nd box and then a $95 fee for a technician to come out and plug it into the wall. Then I would have to pay $10/month for the 2nd box. It stinks how they strong arm you into more expense when you are already paying them a boat load per month. What would you do?

You should be able to split the single HDMI output from the HD box using a powered HDMI splitter like the one below at Monoprice. From what I've read non-powered (passive) splitters are a crapshoot as they'll often decrease the signals levels too low for reliable data transmission. http://is.gd/9kQEU Then you'll need to run an HDMI cable to the bedroom from one of the splitter outputs, with the other one going to the 1st TV. Depending on the distance, you'll have to choose between 24 guage or 22 gauge cables. I don't know for sure, but I think that for distances beyond 30 feet, you should consider the 22 gauge HDMI cables. Monoprice has great prices on high quality HDMI cables http://is.gd/9kQWL Of course, you must realize that, with the cable box in another room, you'll have to run in there to change channels on the HD box unless your box has an RF remote.

They got you by the .......There's not much you can do unless you rent another box. Being that the dvr is used by two tv's, if they made a splitter or a/b box that accepts an hdmi cable, you would have to run it to the attic and drop it down the wall and then you would be watching what TV 1 is watching. That defeats the dual set up on the dvr. :o(
