DVD-type question: Why do some play and some do not?

  • For cd recording, I have my best success with cd-rw disc. I can go into real player, change it to data recording and on cd-rw I can use my Sony dvd-vhs video player recorder to play both audio as well as picture and cd-rom (video) discs. However, when I record video (That I plug my vhs video camera into my media center pc) and try to burn it onto a dvd, some dvd discs record it, some don't. Some recorded dvd discs play on the computer, but not on my tv dvd player. Is there a best type of dvd to record on that plays on all dvd players? I tried dvd-r, dvd+-rw. dvd+r, dvd-rw, and so forth. Is there a best dvd blank that plays on every type of dvd player?

    Hi palon, It isn't the blank that will play on every type of player. It depends on what the player will read. +R seems to be the most universally accepted but most players also support -R. Be careful of Memorex DVDs and Cd's. They are not very good and will often fail in every player except the one they were recorded on. You can't go wrong with Sony or Verbatim. Norm

I think the discs dont matter in this case. It all depends on the software in which you are using to burn the media. If you want to make a data disc you can using both cd-r and dvd-r The RW in either CD or DVD means rewritable or you cab burn over existing burnt media. If you want to burn a video to a dvd I suggest you try using either Roxio or Nero to burn that media properly so your dvd player can read it. With Nero you can Capture images from any source such as your video camera. Nero will capture it and then later burn it on a dvd. Your computer is a DVD-ROM drive while the DVD player buy the tv is not as complicated as that. Your set top box cant tell what video is unless it is told where it is on the disc. NERO does this autmatically. Give it a shot.

I had a similar problem where I was having about a 50% success rate. The problem was that the DVDs I was using were of poor quality. The discs spin while reading or writing. Poor quality discs can be out of balance, some wobbling so badly (even though you may not be able to see it if you have the DVD burner open) that they cannot write without an excessive amount of error.
