How to use QAM tuner?

Will this TV Tuner work for recording and playback via Comcast HD? Can I pick up ESPN OTA HD as a fallback?

  • Hi all, I'm thinking about purchasing a Hauppauge WinTV-HVR-2250 Dual TV Tuner / Encoder 1229: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16815116037 This will go into my home theater PC. But I have concerns as this TV tuner may be obsolete for use with Comcast cable HD. I have read on some forums that Comcast is using more and more encrypted channels and since this card can only pick up clear-QAM and ATSC, I may not be able to get the recording and playback capability I desire. As an alternative... I may have to resort to OTA HD content... but then I have some more questions: How many channels will I be able to pick up via OTA HD? Can I pick up ESPN OTA HD in San Jose, CA? Thanks!!!!!

    Ok, first, there is no such thing as "ESPN OTA". ESPN does not broadcast **ANY** TV signals anyplace. They are a cable network only. As far as what channels you will be able to get, I can't answer that even knowing that you are in San Jose as you have not told me a thing about what sort of antenna system you will be using. Put your zip code into the following and you will get the information you need. Pay special attention to the color coding. Just because the station is listed does not mean you will receive the station if you use a rinky dink indoor antenna, for example. http://www.antennaweb.org/aw/Address.aspx

You can buy an ATI TV Tuner card with CableCard support http://ati.amd.com/products/tvwonderdigital/index.html You can get a CableCard from Comcast

That tuner will be limited to ATSC/unencrypted QAM (which ESPN-HD may not be), or SD from a cable box. If you want to record cable in HD, wait until next year for Ceton to release their Cablecard tuner.
