How to get cable stations back?

Do you have to pay for cable service when you have a digital converter box to get any stations?

  • I was reading an article on Kiplinger.com called "Cut the Cable Cord". I was under the impression that in order to use the digital converter box you had to also have a subscription to a cable service. Or is this one of those things that in certain places in KY you have to use a cable system to get reception at all?

  • Answer:

The digital converter box is needed because even the free stations now broadcase in digital, so if your tv set is not new it is not digital. The box takes care of that problem. Whether you can get free reception without cable or satellite depends on where you live. It probably hasn't changed since before the box -- if you have always gotten free tv with just rabbit ears in the past, you can probably get free tv now with just the box. When you buy a new tv, the digital will be built in and you won't need the box.

Other answers

You are totally confusing things. A digital converter box is for receiving over the air broadcast TV with a antenna and it has nothing at all to do with "cable service". People which had (or have) cable service do not need a digital converter box because they do not receive broadcast TV over the air.
