Comcast vs DirecTV-Should I switch?

• I currently have Comcast for high-speed internet(their best plan available in my area) and DirecTV for TV service. I have an HD DVR with locals,movie channels,etc. as part of Total Choice Premier and I also have DirecTV's protection plan;for all of that,I pay about $130 a month. Help me figure out whether I should switch to Comcast or not. A few things I like are that they will try to give me a deal but not sure how good. Also,a feature Comcast has is that you can connect an external hard drive to their DVR and expand storage capability but...someone who used to work for them recently told me that it's not officially recognized and that if the DVR should at any time do a software update,that feature might all of a sudden might not work;not sure if it's true or not. Someone else savvy about tech stuff said if I switched,I should get a Tivo because they and Comcast are compatible but,unfortunately,I can't possibly afford to buy,outright,a Tivo at the prices I'm seeing on their site so...if I switched I'd have to deal with Comcast's own DVR. Also,what about pricing as far as installation for Comcast-what are any upfront costs? I've also heard that even if you get any kind of deal at first,before it's even up,you better watch your bill for any kind of extra fees,surcharges,etc. If you have /had Comcast,please answer with any pros/cons,bad experiences,etc!!! If you haven't but know something to be true that would help,please answer!!

  The price would be the about the same. I have Comcast Internet plus HD with the DVR and it costs me about $140/mo. One advantage of making the switch is that you could find a promotion on the Comcast web site (varies by location), that would get you a cut rate deal for 6 months or a year. After that, it's up to the full rate such as I cited above. Another advantage in some areas: since you only have Internet, not TV via Comcast, getting any TV package should drop the Internet fee. In my area, Internet without a TV subscription is about $70/mo., and with any TV package (even bare bones basic) it drops to $42.50. Your total cost, then, depends on what TV channel package you select.
