Connecting outdoor HD antenna?

Can I use satellite dish as an outdoor HD antenna?

  • I don't want to buy an expensive indoor antenna. My house has a Directv dish on the roof from the previous owner. All the cables and ports are still there. How can I use it as an outdoor VHF/UHF HD antenna? Hope someone knows. Thank you.

  • Answer:

You can use the RG-6 cabling that is there to connect between your TV and a antenna but the dish itself would make a lousy antenna. I do not know how far you are away from broadcast towers but an indoor antenna isn't very good itself. For example, I've an old amplified one here and all my broadcast towers are only 25 miles away sitting on top of a +1000 ft mountain. Even then with no obstructions in between, I can't get half the stations. I've installed a very small outside antenna which cost less than $30 and now I get all the subchannels (which Directv doesn't carry) and I've better FM reception for the sound system too.

Sorry the satellite dish only receive directv programming and does not function as a outdoor VHF/UHF antenna. You would need to purchase a indoor or outdoor antenna for your television.
