• I was thinking about ordering one form ebay, but need a few questions answered first. 1. Will it work in my room? We have an hd receiver and hd dvr receiver in other rooms. I just didn't have the $200 for one in my room when roommate and I got service. I know we at least have the right satellite. 2. How much extra does it cost to use an hd dvr? 3. I heard once that on top of the $200 i'll pay for the receiver on ebay, that it'll cost almost another $100 to activate it.. Is that true? Thanks.

  First, almost 100% of DIRECTV DVRs are leased (meaning DIRECTV still owns them) and it's very likely that the person selling the DVR on ebay does not actually own it, but is trying to sell one that he leased. If that turns out to be the case, you will not be able to activate the DVR for any amount of money. I would get the DVR directly from DIRECTV or an authorized retailer to make sure you aren't buying a stolen DVR... it will still be about $200 either way. Now for the answers to your questions..... 1) It depends on if you have a "single wire" installation or not. Look at the hookup to the existing DVR (not the other receiver). If there is only a single wire coming from the satellite, you can just hook another single wire to the new DVR. If there are two wires, you will need to run two wires to the DVR from two free outputs on a multiswitch (which you may not have). 2) If you already have one DVR on the account, adding a second one costs $5 per month. If you are replacing (deactivating) the HD receiver, that will save you $5, so then it will be no additional cost. 3) If the DVR on ebay is a stolen DVR that was leased from DIRECTV, you won't be able to activate it for any amount of money. If the ebay seller really owns it, you will probably have to buy a new access card from DIRECTV in order to activate it, which is another reason to get the DVR from DIRECTV... a new access card will be included with any DVR you get from DIRECTV, and then activation is free.
