How to get location of NSStatusItem on the screen?

Why a hum in dvd playback that changes with the intensity of color on the screen?

  • When I insert a dvd to load, a pale blue screen with Sony logo appears advising me it's loading but I get a faint hum in the background. As I play the dvd, the hum persists but changes in intensity according to the color saturation on the screen. Intense reds for example make the hum the loudest. The hum changes every time the tv screen picture changes. Ideally I should only play a b&w dvd I guess since then I don't get any hum. Sometimes the hum is loud enough to interfere with the audio, but increasing the audio only makes the hum grow louder as well. This has only started after moving to a new location but with the same dvd/tv units being used. Maybe one of the units got damaged in the move? Any help appreciated since now I've effectively got a dvd I can't use. Many thanks.

  • Answer:

This sounds like problem related to the video signal overmodulating into the audio signal. I suspect that the problem is with the TV, not the DVD player. The classic presentation of this problem used to be when a white super or caption would cause a hum on a TV. Was mostly apparent on local commercials. Try turning the color down, see if that helps.
