Are DVD recorders as reliable as VCR's?

Do DVD recorders work just like VCRs?

  • By that I mean can you just plug in the cable input and it will record to the DVD and record over old recordings?

  • Answer:

As a rule, no, it won't automatically record over old recordings. If you want to replace an old recording with a new one, you have to go into the menu and delete the old recording first. That is the main difference. If you want to be able to delete recordings and make new ones in their place, you must record onto DVD-RW, DVD+RW, or DVD-RAM discs. Recordings on DVD-R and DVD+R discs can't be deleted, so only use these discs for recordings you intend to keep.

Other answers

Nope, you need a Re-Writable Disk "RW" and the only way to write over the old recordings is to delete them first. Writables or "R's", is a one time "only" record. From my experience, Only the content on Writables can be removed, but you can't free the space. You'll need to also see what RW's your Player supports. Some don't support Video CD or DVD-RAM. Check your manufacturers website or manual for that info.
