DVR use with basic cable?

Can I use my own DVR with cable?

  • I currently have digital cable with DVR service via TWC. I would like to cut down costs and get basic cable (or even digital cable) and purchase my own DVR box. Is it possible to do so? I find conflicting information and I'm not sure. I'm just trying to look into my options, other than just switching to another service where I'd still be paying for the DVR service, etc.

  • Answer:

You cannot buy the same box the provider uses. Or at least if you somehow did, the provider will not activate it. Their box can only be rented from them, and with that, you need some level of digital cable to use. You can get 3rd party DVRs, such as TiVo. You can get used TiVos with Product Lifetime, or Product Lifetime separate. Another option may to be to build an HTPC DVR.

Other answers

Depending on the cable service, you can usually use cable cards with a Tivo series 3 or 4(Premiere) to use to record TV. You can also use a Series 1 or 2 Tivo DVR using IR cables to control you cable box, if you have one.
