What are some non-subscription DVR's?

What are the DirecTV DVRs that supports the new MPEG4 HD format carried in (ku) bandwidth? ?

  • I understand that some of the current DirecTV DVRs (e.g. HR10-250) will not be able to decode the MPEG4 signals (my understanding is that future HD signals will be in that format) carried over the ku bandwidth. Can someone give me a list of current (or future) DirecTV DVRs that supports the new format? Thanks,

Hello, The Model numbers are pretty simple: H= HD HR= HD DVR R= DVR D= Standard Any H or HR receiver over 10, so H20, H21, HR20, HR21, HR22 (Not released in all areas), HR23 (Not released in all areas) as well as the R16 (Not released in all areas) are Ka/Ku compatible. The R16 does not do HD. It has the chip to do it, but it is not activated. It also has a built in single wire multiswitch, to eliminate dual sat in cables, so you'd only need one. Currently 95% of Directv HD is MPEG4. Any new channels added will be in MPEG4.

Actually the HR10-250 is the only HD receiver I have heard of that does not support mpeg4. The HR20, HR21, HR22, HR23 all support mpeg4.

Your DTV reciever must be HR20 or higher. There are many other recievers out there, but only the new ones will. Not only will you need a HR20 or better (HR21, HR22, or HR23) You will also need a new "SLIMLINE" dish. Look at your satellite dish. If it does not have SLIMLINE on the dish, you will need an upgrade from DTV. It should be free. A sidecar LNB dish would also work if you know how to distinguish a sidecar LNB
