How do I get U-verse, DirecTV or Dish Network installed right !!?
-
I am moving to a house that has never been wired for any kind of satellite or cable for TV reception. Where I am living now I have DirecTV which I like except when the weather is bad and I would be ok to go with that at the new house for my new HDTV. But I already know how DirecTV installs stuff. Punches holes though the brick of the house and then wraps wire around the building for the other TV or runs wires along the woodwork from room to room. There's got to be a better way. I'm thinking of going with U-verse because I'm thinking that that runs using the existing phone wiring in the house. I may not be understanding that right. Also I need a new phone line run into a bedroom and I'm sure AT&T can fish a line. Not so sure about the DirecTV third party installers. I would like to be able to have a wireless network in the house but only U-verse seems to provide that. DirecTV doesn't. Ok, so to make a long story short. I don't want cables wrapped all around my house and running along the woodwork. I want wall outlets where each TV can be plugged in, ie., I want someone who will fish cable. There is a basement when most of the ceiling is not covered so the access shouldn't be too bad. So my question is, which of these companies will do what I want. Which will do a better job of fishing cables and doing a proper installation. I know fishing cables isn't covered by the "standard professional installation" included with these plans. But how should I approach this. Is one company better at this or more willing to fish cables? Will some of them absolutely not do it? Or should I hire an electrician(what kind) to do this work? I can't do it myself. I've tried reading up on this and I can't get any really good answer. I live in the Chicago area. Any suggestions or info would be appreciated. Thanks

First, would just like to point out that DirecTV does have the ability to network your TVs together, it is called Whole Home DVR...however you will need to have an HD DVR and an HD Receiver to do this. Now...if you home is already prewired with acceptable cable, then an install requiring wrapping the entire house is not necessary...Be specific...as an installer, I try to make my wires as unnoticeable as possible. If you choose to have someone come in and pre-install your jacks for you make sure that they use correct equipment. For Example, Your cable needs to be 18AWG Solid Copper RG6, and run to a location that is easily tied into your system. I would suggest an A/V Specialist to run these wires...chances are they will be able to mount your TV, and Surround sound speakers at the same time....They specialize in this sort of thing... As another poster has already suggested...it really depends on the installer. You have to make sure that the installer understands exactly what you want. If the tech that comes to your doorstep is driving a POV...reschedule...they are more than likely a subcontractor that does not have to pass QC. I can say beyond a reasonable doubt...DirecTV does wall fishes (cause i do), and Telephone is only run as part of a standard installation for a receiver in that room (which you can demand be installed at the receiver)...and Wall plates are a part of my standard installation...

Get a 3rd party installer which will install the necessarily cabling in the walls. Have them install two coaxes and Cat6 cables to each location, that will cover all your bases. Possibly have them wire for surround speakers, if that is in your future. Yes it will cost a bit, but will be what you want, not the easy/cheap way the provider's contract installer may do it.

It really depends on the installer not the company. If you don't tell them exactly what you want, you will find out that they will do it the easy way. Whoever you pick, you might want to set it up ahead of time with the company telling them that you don't want wires running around the house. However, some walls cannot be fished because of cross members for support. The U-verse should be a cable company and I'm not sure but I don't think it works on the existing phone wires. Most telephone companies will work for time and materials but that doesn't solve your problems with the tv installation. Just tell them what you want ahead of time. Good luck
