How do I get a dvd decoder?

I've downloaded a lot of dvd decoders but none of them have applied to my media player and I've updated my media player to. I really want to watch dvd's on my laptop but I can't seem to make them play. Every time it says something about needing a compatible dvd decoder. So can someone tell me about a free dvd decoding download that actually works, please?

For good dvd decoders you need to buy one and download it. If it is one of the free ones they don't work as well. Because They Are Free. Below is a site where you can see good quality decoders although they aren't cheap for something so small to download they work great.
