How exactly does a DVD-R work?

Do plain white Sony DVDr's work with Lightscribe?

  • I am expecting an LG Electronics GE20LU10 external DVD burner any day via mail and was wondering if the discs I have will be compatible with the Lightscribe label making process. After purchasing the Sony 100 pack of DVDr's I threw all the packaging away so I don't know exactly what they are except that they are coated on the label side with an all pastel white, or flat white, like coating. Can labels be printed on this kind of DVDr? Or do I need to buy more Lightscribe specific discs? For all I know these Sony discs may be compatible? Hard to tell without the packaging. If anyone knows or dared to try please let me know.

  • Answer:

You need Lightscribe specific discs. The ones you describe with the white tops sound like they're ink-jet printable ones, if you have an inkjet printer with a CD printing tray in it.
