What's the best way to connect my PC to my TV?

What is the best way to connect Cable Tv (through coaxial cable) to my PC so i can USE my PC as a DVR?

  • Please be specific on which video card brands and software programs you used or reccomend. I've seen some that supposedly allow you to use the digital tv guide on the pc so you could actually program like with the cable companies dvr. PC is running Vista Home Basic (If you only have XP solutions, please list those also) Cable provider is COX (midwest) Would like to be able to play/record HDTV as well. Thanks. I'm dying to free up the memory on my DVR by making DVD's of my favorite shows (Futurama, South Park, etc.)

  • Answer:

What you want to use is a tv tuner card which you can plug into your pci slot on your computer. Go to a computer store or online the simpler ones are about $20. Try newegg.com

I started out with this PCI TV Tuner card and attached my first DirecTV Tivo with the coaxial cable from one room to aother room where my PC was. I have put a Ebay COMPLETED listing so you have an Idea of the Tuner card I used. It worked good and I was ble to Record to the PC, edit the shows/movies, then burn them to DVD. http://cgi.ebay.com/PCI-TV-Tuner-Video-Capture-Card-w-FM-Radio-Remote-NEW_W0QQitemZ290110822057QQihZ019QQcategoryZ3761QQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem Or you may find different ideas from the site www.dvrplayground.com. well i know if u have a motorola dvr you can use the SATA port (the external hard drive port) on the back to expand your hard drive. im doing the same thing i called cox and they said the SATA port is active so u can buy one i bought one on buy.com i got the 500GB one just make sure it says its a SATA hard drive not a usb or firewire. so just plug it in and as soon as u plug it in there should be a message saying that its pluged in on the tv. and what ever u have on the hard drive thats in the box will not be affected! hope this helps!
