Can I hook up my HD cable box to my computer via a tv tuner?

  • I'm moving to a new apartment, and I really don't want to spend hundreds of dollars on a tv if I can just use my computer, since my monitor is 22". But I don't know much about tv tuners. I'm having HD cable and internet installed in a couple days, I was wondering if it could be connected to a tv tuner on my computer just as easily as buying a tv. If so, that would save me a ton of money.

    The cable box may have an HDMI output. If it does, you might be able to use an HDMI to DVI adaptor. But I would ask around at a site like avsforum.com to see how well that looks. Otherwise, I don't think it's trivial, because monitors usually lack component video or other analog inputs.

Depending on the monitor, you could connect the cable box directly to it. If you want to watch TV through your computer, a normal tuner card will only accept SD video from the cable box. To get HD wth a tuner card, you need to tune the digital source directly, and with cable, only a few channels are clear and HD usually. If you want to watch HD from the cable box through the computer, you need something like a Hauppauge HD-PVR component capture device. You will not find a card which records HDMI from a pay TV box, because such boxes often use HDCP, and any card would have to honor HDCP.

sure you can-i have the same set up make sure your tv tuner card has the right inputs make sure it has either a HDMI or a DVI input and not just a coaxial cable or A/v ports.if you buy one with a remote control it should work on your cable box as well also you can DVR your favorite shows right on your computer no need for paying 15$ for thier DVR option
