Will my TiVo service still work if I cancel my cable subscription?
-
Okay, Comcast is getting so far out of line with costs and its monopoly that I could buy a decent car after paying for cable for only 5 years and an even better one if I go 10 years. Seriously, it would be cheaper for me to go to the theatre for what I pay based on my actual usage. It would be ooooh so much nicer if there were some sort of a-la-cart where I could pick the stations I actually use rather than have all these tiers with one or two stations I really watch spread out between 3 levels. What's with that? Anyway, I would LOVE to cancel Comcast, but as a TiVo (lifetime subscriber) will I lose the ability for my TiVo to actually work. Currently it has the cable hooked into it and it is able to record stations based on cable input. Buuuuut, what if I only have the Over The Air antenna -- will TiVo subscription work with that? And how do I go about hooking up the TiVo box to the antenna so it will work?

Answer:
Yes it will work. - This assumes you bought your TiVo unit and it is NOT rented or provided by Comcast. You need to go into the setup menu and change the source to over-the-air for your zip code. You will get the channel listing for the channels that are "supposed to be available" in your area. As for a-la-cart programming that will NOT happen anytime soon. The cable TV networks will not permit it. They tell the advertisers how many homes they are in, so they want to be bundled with the MOST popular cable packages to be in the highest possible number of homes. Also with analog cable there is NO practical way to give you only a few channels. With digital cable and set top boxes becoming almost mandatory, this could change. Set top boxes will allow individual channels to be passed or blocked electronically, but the cable networks will object. Satellite delivered TV (Dish and DirecTV have that ability now, but they still bundle packages. A-la-cart is an idea that as they say " is NOT yet ready for prime-time,"

This doesn't answer your question, but will provide some information that you may find interesting. A la carte just isn't feasible today. It is technically possible for digital cable service, but would actually result in most people paying MORE for their cable service, not less. This article gives a good explanation as to why: http://www.nytimes.com/2007/11/24/business/media/24nocera.html?pagewanted=all (Note: This article is from 2007, so some of the information about the make-up of the FCC is no longer current, but the explanation still holds.)

If you cancel your service TiVo will not work . If you live in a city that has AT&T you might want to call them and see if their UVERSE service is available. It's the best cable TV type product on the market today and usually more reasonably priced. It can include a kicking DVR much better than TiVO. Here is a link to their site.....http://www.att.com/u-verse. Tell them this PROMO CODE mw2137. They can also sell and install you a Direct TV system if you prefer that service. But Uverse is by far the best on the planet.
