Freeview HD set top box connecting query?
-
Thinking of getting a Freeview HD set top box, after discovering I can get the HD channels where I live. Have looked through some manuals online about setting them up, but none really answer my query as to how I'd hook my set up together. Here is my set up: TV (normal Freeview built in) DVR - has Freeview as well, currently aerial goes in here to get the programmes - same set up as the old VCR. I would need to add the HD set top box as well to get the HD channels. The set top box will just need to go into the TV, not bothered about recording anything from it, if I want to record something I can do this on the DVR, and that can't record in HD, so no point in hooking them up unless I have to. What I am wondering is where the aerial needs to go! My alternative is to keep my set up as is (currently using PC to access HD channels via it's HDMI, happy enough when it works, but lagging is a problem at busy times!). Another alternative may be to get a TV tuner for the PC and watch via Media centre (either via PC or Xbox), if that would work! (Am now currently wishing I'd held back a year so I could buy a TV with Freeview HD built in!!)

Answer:
Connections as follows to give you the best HD picture. -->HD --> DVR --> TV HD connects to TV via HDMI DVR connects to TV via Scart As you've no intention of recording off your HD box you can use this as your primary viewing platform on the TV so technically you've no need to actually connect the arial to the TV (you'll never use the built in freeview only ever the HD box).

All you need to do when you purchase your Freeview HD digital box is simply to unplug the aeriel connection at the back of your television and reconnect to the Ariel on the back of the Freeview HD box and that's it. However if you purchase Freeview HD with built in recorder, you can record 2 channels and watch a program you have recorded previously or if you still want to watch e.g The Gadget Show on Channel 5 through the 'built-in' FreeView on your television then simply connect a cable to the spare socket next to the one where you reconnected the TV aeriel and doing this you do not waste the 'built-in freeview. A 'local' tv engineer connected my BT Vision box this way for me when I needed to re-align my aeriel.
