Can I use my Tivo as an Audio Receiver?

DirecTV DVR (digital box > DVR/Tivo > Tivo?)?

  • I just got DirecTV installed, standard digital box, not DVR. A buddy has an old Tivo he was willing to give me. So my question is, if i sent the signal from the wall, to the DirecTV receiver, to the Tivo, then to the TV will this work? Will i be able to use the Tivo menu? It would be nice to be able to record, its just not worth paying a monthly fee.

  • Answer:

If it is a DirecTV TiVo DVR, you install in in place of your receiver. You need to call DirecTV to have it moved to your account, and move the card over, or get another one. There is no way it will cost more than the regular DVR fee, and you should not be leasing it or have any further contract. If it is a standlone TiVo, you have the connections right, except you need IR blasters as well, and a phone or network connection. You will more than likely have to subscribe to the TiVo service from TiVo. DirecTV does not provide DVR service for those DVRs.

You won't be able to use the Tivo unless you subscribe to the service. DirecTV charges $7 per month for DVR service.
