Which DVD Recorder Should I Buy?
-
So I decided I want/need to buy a DVD Recorder. Why, you ask? A couple of reasons. First, the family video VHS collection is begging to be transferred, and second, recording TV to video cassettess is so 1990s. So the first thing I did was to visit the websites of my friendly giant electronic retailer(no 's') Best Buy and Future Shop. To my surprise I found less than 5 listed for sale at both, some suspiciously affordable and some expensive. And many are completely sold out! What gives? Why does it seem like there is so little selection of video recorders? Where would you recommend looking for a DVD recorder? What are your experiences with your DVD recorder and which one would you recommend? Does anyone have any experience with using a DVD recorder with their Rogers digital cable box? (Canada)

Answer:
To replace my VCR, I bought a Panasonic DMR-EH55 (US$375) standalone DVR with a 200GB hard drive (HDD) that can record up to 255 hrs at low-quality and 40 hrs at hi-quality, but does not record in HD. You can edit and then burn programs to DVD including input from your VCR. I got it through a Canadian retailer on eBay. For whatever reason, they don't sell standalone DVRs with HDD in the US anymore (lack of demand or TV networks & MPAA coercion). TiVO offers HDD with HD recording because they pay licensing fees, but I did not want to pay a monthly charge for usage like the cable company DVRs. Plus you would have to buy a separate DVD Recorder to burn to DVD if you don't want to export it to your computer. My brother bought a Philips DVDR3576H/37 from Walmart (US$250) that has a 160GB HDD but I don't think the interface is as good as the Panasonic. Also some companies offer DVD Recorder/VCR Combos that record directly to DVD, but you cannot edit the content like commercials.

Look at a DVR you will never go back to VHS tapes. You can record onto a hard drive and watch it back. Most carries have them now days. Dish, direct and even cable. I would check with your provider and see what they have to offer.

use a computer to capture it, those stand alone dvd recorders suck in quality comparison
