What is a TV Tuner (computer)?

  • I use emode to watch dvd's on my computer and notice that the software has a feature for watching tv. When I click on it, I get a message saying "No tv tuner installed." What exactly is a tv tuner or what is needed to view tv from the channel list?

    It is an add-on for your computer that can tune in TV channels just like a regular TV. If you have a desktop computer, the device (usually a circuit board) plugs into a slot inside your computer. If you have a laptop, there are TV tuners that connect through USB. Note: You will need to connect your new TV Tuner to the Cable or Dish coax cable in order to receive the TV signal. TV tuner manufacturers include: Hauppauge, ATI, Diamond and others... just Google Computer TV Tuners. Installation and setup can be challenging. You will need to put a splitter on your coax.. and also spend some time understanding the process for accessing the Channel Guide and setting up shows you want to record. Using your computer like a TiVo or a DVR requires a lot of processing power... generating heat and fan noise.

A TV Tuner is an adapter that converts the A/V output of the TV into a format readable by the computer.
