Help! Question about hooking up Directv Plus HD DVR?
-
I found a Directv Plus HD DVR Model HR 21 700 at a thrift store. I have Directv service. I am thinking I need to obtain HD access from Directv, but since I didn't buy the receiver from them, how does that work? Thanks for your help!

Answer:
It depends on the status of the receiver in the thrift store. Example- if the previous owner had it as a leased, and now their account is in collections- you would be unable to use the receiver. (happens very often when buying equipment on eBay and other 3rd party retailers). However if the receiver is at an owned status- you would be able to purchase it. Once you get the receiver you would have to purchase a new access card for the receiver to be added to your account. The access card is $20 and takes about a week to get to you. Then you would have to have HD Access on your account- which is $10 a month. Then an installation of a 5LNB dish has to be installed. The reason behind that is an "LNB" is what gets information from a sattelite. The HD gets information from 5 seperate sattelites. If you dont have HD already then the dish has to be insalled. Depending on your account status- the installation will be chareable. DirecTV doesnt provide free upgrades (very rarely only discounted to customers who have been with DirecTV for over 3 years and never been late). The installation fee is $49 plus tax. So to get started- it would be the cost of the HDDVR from the thrift store. $20 (access card- one time fee) $10 (HD access- monthly rate) and $49 (installation) If you decided to upgrade through DirecTV the cost for an HDDVR is $199 plus $19.95 shipping and handling (if its your fist HDDVR the installation would be for free) and that would require a 24 month commitment. Hope this helped.

just call them with the # inside the door on the right bottom side and they will load or send a card for it. DirecTV upgrades for free they might just set you up with a new one. P.S if it is internet capable run ethernet and phone line you won't be let down. 3,000+ programs on demand online.

Another variable in this is the antenna which you have. If you do not have HD service then you do not have a 5LNB, which is required in order to get all HD channels.
