Are Comcast and TiVo compatible?

Is there a way to use my TiVO with Comcast (Houston area)?

  • My husband & I moved from Las Vegas to Houston. We used & loved our TiVO's (not sure which series they are) in Vegas. We had them hooked with ethernet between both boxes (& hooked to the cable modem so we got internet); we miss being able to transfer the items we record in the living room to the bedroom and visa versa. Houston was just starting their switch to Comcast & we were denied usage of our TiVO's & given a lame DVR. I wanted to cry, but I was hopeful with the changeover, we *might* be able to use our TiVO's again. Alas we still can't & we dislike this DVR to the point we're ready to throw both of them out the window & go for satellite. I really miss my TiVO. Is there *any* way to use our TiVo's the way we did in Vegas with Cox, here in Houston with Comcast? -cry- I want my TiVO back -sniff-. -begs- please? pretty please?

  • Answer:

I have used TiVo with Comcast (in California) for almost 8 years. Both an old Series 1 and the Series 3 HD TiVo. Who ever told you at Comcast that you can't use your TiVo was not being accurate. Just hook up the TiVo to the cable outlet, make sure you have changed your TiVo DVR settings to select your new dial-up (unless you are using internet for updates), enter your new zip code, and select your new local Comcast provider. The Comcast rep was truthful in that the TiVo will not do Comcast OnDemand. You may not be able to record digital channels unless you have a CableCard capable TiVo. If you find your TiVo adequate for your viewing habits, you can return the Comcast DVR and save the monthly fees that Comcast charges for their equipment. I did. I liked OnDemand, but it wasn't worth the pain of using the Comcast DVR when I could use the TiVo Series 3 HD. The TiVo Dual Tuner already does two recordings at once, although not on digital Cable. The TiVo Series 3 (HD) already records two shows at once. The new TiVo HD (lower priced version of the Series 3) will support recording two shows at once. Note that the Series 3 and TiVo HD do not support moving shows between units or PCs due to cable company content rights issues. (The cable companies have a stick up ...)
