What is the best DVD recorder to transfer VHS to DvD?

  • I would like to transfer my VHS collection to DVD. Do I have to buy a dvd recorder/vhs playback, or can I just buy a dvd recorder and hook it to my current vhs player and record? I would also like to know the best device to purchase for $225 and under. What are things I should lokk for in a DVD recorder? Please help! THANX

    Hi sickntyred, You can buy just the DVD recorder. You will hook the output of your VHS into the input of the DVD recorder. It isn't hard. I think any DVD recorder will do the job fine. I have used a Sony and an LG without any issues. Let me caution you on a couple things. First most pre-recorded tapes have copy protection and will not copy. If you want to copy pre-recorded movies for your own backups you can buy a device that bypasses the copy guard for about $25. I had some store bought movies so I got the device to bypass the copy guard and it worked fine. I got it at Best Buy. It is called a "GO-DVD" made by Simo Co. Second, VHS tapes aren't DVD quality to start with and there is some additional loss during the copy process so your copies are "watchable" but not great. Third you are copying your tapes in real time so the process is lengthy. It takes two hours to copy a two hour tape. I hope this information helps you make the right decision. Good luck, Norm

I would suggest getting a DVD-recorder with 3D comb filter for analog recording since all VCR outputs composite and/or S-video. 3D comb filtering provides better color and luma seperation for the signal. Some recorders are also equipped with time base correction where the video jitter caused by the VCR head switch could be corrected. The Panasonic ES20 should have such features.
