What are some DVR alternatives to TiVO?

Tivo & Direct TV. Several family members have Direct TV DVR with the Tivo software. Can u stil get this?

  • My wife and I are deeply in love with all of the features that Tivo has to offer- little things like the several second fast forward/reverse buffer, network connection to PC's, ect. I am having some trouble getting answers to the following: Does Direct TV offer a DVR that uses the Tivo framework instead of their generic recorder? Of course when I call all I get is "Yes we have a DVR" and the sales folks are stumped when I ask that question. Additionally, does anybody have any thoughts on Verizon FiOS DVR? How well does it work? OR- am I overreacting to the features that very well could go unnoticed by me since I have not used either yet...

    directv doesnt offer TiVo interface anymore,it is the best..Dish network is close..so close that Tivo has been going to court with dish network over copy right infringements for years. directv's version is a distant third

DirectTV doesn't offer Tivo anymore. I still have my Tivo box from DirectTV that I got some years ago. Sometime ago I thought it broke (I freaked out!!) and when I called to get it fixed, they said that they do not have Tivo anymore and I had to get a DVR. Luckily, my Tivo reset itself and I was ok. My friend has FiOS DVR and she had DirectTV Tivo and she says that she misses Tivo and regrets going to FiOS. I also heard that Tivo was coming back to DirectTV but that was about 2 years ago......

I read a while ago that DiretTV and Tivo renewed their partnership and would be coming out with new DVR models with the Tivo software. I don't think that's happened yet though. I'm waiting. I have an old DirectTV/Tivo box and don't really want to trade it in for DirectTV's DVR version. I don't know anything about Verizon's FiOS service.
