DirecTV DVR-receiver questions!?
-
Right now we have direcTV and I was wondering about this: If I bought the DVR-receiver for $99.00 is that a monthy fee for the box or a one time fee? Am I renting the box or owning it? Can I just buy the box and thats all or is there a service I need to buy aswell to go along with the box? Do I keep my current basic box and have the DVR-receiver with it aswell or do I only have my DVR-receiver? Thank you! This is the website I'm looking at: https://www.directv.com/DTVAPP/content/equipment/dvr_receiver

Answer:
The $99 is a one time upfront fee on what is really a leased receiver that you do not actually own. Since you say that you currently have a "basic box" I assume that you already are paying for DirecTV service, so you will have to call DirecTV and activate the DVR on your account, and you will have to add DVR service to your account at $6/month or else the DVR will only operate like a basic receiver. If you don't deactivate your basic receiver, you will then have two receivers and/or DVRs on your account, so you will have pay an additional $5 per month for the additional receiver on your account. If you deactivate your old original receiver you will only pay an additional $6 per month for DVR service. If you add a second DVR to your account, you will only have to pay the extra $5 per month that has to be paid for any additional receivers... the monthly $6 DVR fee covers an unlimited number of DVRs on your account.

The money you pay is just a down payment on a lease. You will need to talk to DirecTV if you want to purchase the box outright. In addition to the lease fee, there is a DVR service fee. As said, it is your choice to keep the old box for a second TV, or just replace the one you have now. Also, if your dish is an older one, you might need it upgraded to get the new HD channels.

You are renting the box. >Can I just buy the box< No, the Directv boxes are not sold... even places like Best Buy, who usually do not sufficiently make it clear that the boxes they "sell" are really not being sold. Keep in mind what happens if you "lease" a car. You pay a few thousand up front along with a lease charge. However, that up front fee is not you "buying" the car. >there a service I need to buy aswell to go along with the box< You need the service in addition to the box or you have nothing. >Do I keep my current basic box and have the DVR-receiver with it aswell or do I only have my DVR-receiver< That is up to you. Do you want to keep the original box and have the new DVR too?
