What is the difference between TiVo and DVR?

  • I presently have cable and rent a DVR player - I am switching to a dish and have the choice of buying my own DVR player - but what about TiVo? Which is better? And are there subscription fees for both?

    Tivo is to DVR as Kleenex is to facial tissue. It is a brand name. Given what you have written, I would strongly suggest you get whichever DVR the Dish Network or DirecTV is offering for you. It will lead to the easiest transition for you. Yes, Tivo offers specific Tivo-branded functions, but they are fairly negligible. When you switch over to the dish, ask them for their DVR.....

I had TiVO first then I changed to the DVR through my cable co. I MISS TiVo! It is very user friendly and lets you record shows way in the future. My DVR only lets me record shows that are coming up in the next week. Go for TiVO...it's a monthly payment not a subscription. But you have to buy the box

Tivo is a DVR. Tivo brand DVR's are often considered to be the best by most people. You could buy a separate Tivo DVR to work with your Dish receiver, but you would have to pay an additional monthly subscription fee to Tivo, or you could just buy the Dish brand DVR which would not charge an additional fee because you are already paying Dish a monthly fee for programing.

i dont know about a subscription fee for tivo but if you buy the dvr thats it... its yours theres no montly fee or anything, but a dvr player usually has about 100 hours of memory, compared to the average tivo that only has 60, but you could get better ones that have about 250 gb of memory, thats a good 150-200 hours of video, maybe more, so i would say go w/ the dvr, but the tivo is better if your not going to get the standard one, get an upgraded one or something, a'ight homes? a'ight

TiVo claims to have invented the DVR. EchoStar (Dish Network) also makes such a claim. They are currently engaged in a lawsuit – and TiVo is winning. The TiVo user interface is by far the best. When you switch to satellite get a DVR offered by your satellite service. There will be a separate fee for the DVR regardless of who you rent / buy it from. You will not be happy with a stand alone TiVo and a separate satellite box - you’ll pay extra subscription fees with additional cables, multiple tuners (lower quality picture) – an overall headache. DirecTV offers both DirecTiVo and a DirecTV DVR. If you choose DirecTV get the DirecTiVo - a satellite box with an integrated TiVo. EchoStar (Dish Network) costs less that DirecTV, offers more channels with a much better picture (more bandwidth / more satellites). DirecTV has not done well with Rupert Murdoch’s ownership. Dish Network’s newest DVRs are a very good copy of TiVo’s. This contributed to the ongoing litigation. Need a TiVo – subscribe to DirecTV. If picture quality, price, and channel selection are more important get a TiVo copy with Dish Network. I’m hopeful Dish will concede the lawsuit and offer an authentic TiVo interface or buy Tivo outright. This may not happen in the near future (or at all) and should not influence your decision
