If I buy a TiVo unit with a lifetime subscription from eBay, can I activate this unit in Canada?

TiVo is now available in Canada, but I'd really like the lifetime subscription, which is no longer available. I figure my only other option would be to buy a lifetime subscription gift card, but I heard they're only valid in the US. Is there any way around this?
