What antenna should I get for my HD TV?
-
I have an HD TV and I get over-the-air HD through my current antenna. The problem is, every once in a while, I guess the signal is interrupted because the antenna I have right now is an old piece of crap and so the sound goes away and some of the visuals freeze up and pixelate. This only happens for like a second or so. Anyway, we went to Best Buy to buy a new antenna and found out that there's a big price difference between the various antennae. So which antenna would you recommend? And what's the difference between the cheap and expensive antennae?

Answer:
I can only agree with the other answer, very good info. If money doesn't matter, I would hire a pro to put up a 40 foot Rohn tv tower with the biggest antenna possible and make sure they install a rotor to bring in the stations in all possible directions.

You need to approach this methodically. First, you need to find out how far away your stations are. There are two websites that can do this for you. Enter your house address at one of the sites below. http://www.antennaweb.org http://www.tvfool.com Antennaweb also provides recommendations for antennas. Generally, beyond about 15 miles, indoor antennas become useless and you need to get an outdoor antenna, preferably mounted on your roof, although sometimes you can do OK with the antenna mounted in your attic, if you have one. If you live in an apartment, then an indoor antenna may be the only choice. Most of these are pretty awful. One of the only ones I've seen good reviews on is the Winegard SS-3000. SolidSignal.com has a sale on this one now for $40. That's pricey for an indoor antenna, but it's supposed to be pretty good. http://goo.gl/FJtaz One thing you should look at on the two websites listed for TV station locations if the physical RF channel number. This is the actual transmitting frequency, not the displayed (virtual) channel number). If all of the stations you want to receive have actual physical RF channel numbers of 14 or higher, then you can use a UHF-only antenna. These tend to be smaller. If you have channels below actual RF channel 14, then you'll likely need a VHF/UHF antenna, although sometimes a UHF-only antenna may do OK for channel 12 or 13. You'll also want to look at the direction of the station transmitters from your location. If they are all over the compass, then you may need a rotator for an outside antenna, or you'll need to move your indoor antenna for different stations. Good Luck

I agree that you should look up the information based on your house as the first reply stated. I would recommend a HD antenna with an amplifier if your house is a bit away. If it isn't then I think a basic HD antenna with do the trick. Get a quality antenna as it should give you a better image on your tv compared to a basic one (you get what you pay for). I would say the white RCA antenna is good. Basic but sleek and compact. If price is a factor I would go for this and if quality doesn't meet your needs you can always return it within 30 days and get a better antenna. http://www.bestbuy.com/site/RCA+-+Indoor+HDTV+Antenna+-+White/8939839.p?id=1215217075905&skuId=8939839 If getting good quality the first time is important then I would go for the clearstream CSM-1. Better reception than the RCA but it is twice as much money. I prefer the black look over the white. And for even better reception, there is the same antenna but with an amplifier also (more $ though). http://www.bestbuy.com/site/Antennas+Direct+-+ClearStream+Micron+Indoor+Long-Range+Digital+TV+Antenna/9747077.p?id=1218166153600&skuId=9747077 Yes, obviously an outdoor antenna will give you the best reception but since I know this isn't your main way to watch tv and is only for local channels I would work my way up products. Saves money. If time isn't an issue you can buy the antenna from Best Buy and if you are satisfied with the performance, you can buy it cheaper online and then return the other back to the store. Of course, that wouldn't be in the best interest of the store but it depends on you. (Keep in mind Best Buy does price matching and sometimes they will even do it for online sites as long as it doesn't take them below cost)
