Are DVD recorders as reliable as VCR's?

Do they still make or sell VCRs without DVD players or recorders?

  • I seem to recall a few years ago, when the broadcast industry was beginning to prepare for the digital transition, there were still VCR - only systems with digital (ATSC / QAM) tuners. Now it seems as though no retailer has anything except combinations of a VCR with a DVD player or recorder. There is still plenty of fresh blank VHS tape out there in the retail world; why wouldn't there be just plain VCRs to go with them?

There are three manufacturers that I know of still making standalone VCRs...Panasonic, JVC (which invented the VHS format in 1975 with RCA) and Ion (the people who gave you the much-hated-by-audiophile MP3 conversion turntables) sold online at Amazon.com, some specialty home theater sites like Crutchfield.com and the respective manufacturers' websites. There might be a few more sold as grey market imports, so hunt around Amazon ad the auction sites.

They don't make them anymore but there are still some in stock.
