Why does Comcast cable not have HD channels?

I have comcast without hd. if i buy tivo will it get hd channels or do i have to get hd with my cable company?

    Adding to the other answer Comcast HD can only be received with a Comcast authorized high definition digital cable box. Comcast's DVR doubles as a digital cable box. Digital cable is scrambled QAM and cannot be received by a regular of HD TiVo unit. The exception is that IF it accepts a cable card. The cable card can be provided by Comcast (if they have them in your system) and it plugs into the TiVo unit and authorizes the DVR to de-scramble the channels. Some cable system provide the local network stations in Clear QAM, that is they are NOT scrambled by the cable system and your TiVo can get them. BUT Comcast does not put them on in the normal channel lineup and you have to search the channels to find them and program the TiVo unit manually to record them. Plus TiVo will require a monthly fee to get the program guide that you can't use. So you are probably better off getting the HD DVR from the cable system, plus if something happens to the unit the cable company will give you a replacement, with TiVo after the warranty you BUY another unit.

You'd need the Comcast HD package to get all of the HD cable channels, but if you just want the broadcast channels (nbc, cbs, abc, fox, pbs, cw), then you may be able to get them in what's called Clear QAM. Unfortunately, TiVo's programming guide doesn't carry scheduling information for them, so you'd have to program the TiVo manually. The clear QAM channels will have numbers like 5-1 , 7-1, etc. instead of the regular Comcast numbering.
