How can I hook up a Dual Tuner dvr to a second tv?

Charter Digital Cable - TV Tuner?

  • I pay for Charter Digital Cable in St Louis, MO and receive ~70 channels. I'm interested in purchasing a TV Tuner for my computer to turn it into a DVR-type of device to record shows onto my hard drive. Several manufacturers of TV Tuners give hard-to-understand answers concerning if they can detect digital cable signals. Will a TV tuner for a computer be able to receive digital cable if I hook it up to my cable box? Thanks.

  • Answer:

If the tuner has a QAM receiver, then it can receive cable digital TV. However, there are several facts you must be aware of. Just because you have "digital" cable service, doesn't mean that all of your channels are digital. Many cable services have a mix of analog and digital channels on their digital cable. If some of your service is analog, you'll also need an NTSC receiver. If any of the channels are scrambled, the tuner will not be able to unscramble them. Finally, if your PC is a Microsoft Media Center PC, a QAM tuner won't integrate with MCE. There are devices which will integrate with MCE and have QAM tuners. One is HD Homerun.
