What type of HDMI cable do I need for a 1080i HDTV?
-
I have a 1080i HDTV and I have an HDMI cable and I don't know the type of cable. A guy working at best buy told me I should get a better HDMI cable than the one I bought depending on my tv. He told me the one I bought was for 720 HD TVs. Mine Is 1080i so do I need a 1080i HDMI cable or will the one I have work best? I'm not even sure if there are different types of HDMI cables because it doesn't say on the box or online anywhere, I'm just making sure cause the best buy worker told me they are different.

Answer:
I could spend hours talking about the technical specs on HDMI and the resolutions you mentioned. I could spend hours cussing out BestBuy. Here's the short version. 1 - BestBuy will try to rip you off with overcharged things that you don't need. They have NO morals. 2 - BestBuy lied to you: 1080i (interlaced) is exactly the same to your eyes as 720p (progressive scan). The higher resolution is 1080p, which is ONLY available via blue-ray or hd-dvd players or XBOX360 or Playstation 3. ALL TV/cable/satellitecompanies in the USA broadcast in 720p / 1080i (although I once saw a TV commercial for a satellite company claiming full 1080p resolution in one of their packages). 3 - Best Buy lied to you. HDMI is HDMI is HDMI. There are no better/worse as far as performance go. Even the cheapest cable has to conform to standards that the most expensive cable doesn't add to. 4 - BestBuy's margin on cables is about 400% (at least). Buy it online from newegg.com. Here's an article for you, since I would rather not get aggravated (I absolutely despise BestBuy and their practices): http://reviews.cnet.com/hdmi-cable/ And if you doubt me, go to BestBuy, buy the cheapest and most expensive cable, use them (and don't see a difference), then buy it online and when you get the online purchase, return the BestBuy ones! Also, The only difference I noticed on my 720p system (currently running the free composite cable that came with my cable box) was on the sound (the HDMI cable gave me better sound), but I am using my HDMI port for my video game system.

There are high-speed HDMI cables for 1080p, but yours will work just fine (1080i and 720p are virtually identical)
