Answer:
If you only have $200 put it into the microphone and use Audacity to capture the audio. Audacity is free and most plugins as well many use it. http://audacity.sourceforge.net/ MP3 converter http://audacity.sourceforge.net/help/faq?s=install&item=lame-mp3 As for capturing the audio in a good sound environment use blanket and anything that will absorb sound it makes your audio sound better. Good info for you to learn from http://www.youtube.com/results?search_query=setting+up+a+recording+studio&oq=setting+up+a+recording+studio&aq=f&aqi=g1&aql=&gs_sm=e&gs_upl=5965l21161l0l23200l29l29l1l11l11l2l1438l3525l2-1.2.1.0.1.1l6l0 As for the microphone Amazon has them for around $50 to 150 for good to better Mic get a USB Mic that will get you by for now..

Search for 'usb audio interface' or 'usb recording interface'. They often come bundled with stripped down versions of multitrack recording software. Examples are Cubase Elements or Pro Tools LE. You will need this type of software to mix several tracks together.

Hi Mallory, You can get a home studio started really quickly. Some folks recommend Audacity for the software, and because it's free (and a great deal for the price). But I recommend downloading Reaper. You can take as long as you like to evaluate it and it won't stop working. If you decide to purchase it, the license is only $60. Once you start making $20K a year with it, they expect you to get the $250 Professional license, but the software is the same either way. They are very cool. About the mic, get a decent USB mic to start, which is great bang-for-the-buck since you won't need a separate audio interface. The mic does the digital conversion by itself and plugs right into a USB port. Start out with a Samson Q1U for about $47. IF that gives you too much hiss for your liking, move to a USB mic that can do 24 bit conversion, such as the MXL Studio 24 USB Microphone for $149.99. Also, you were right about a mic stand, headphones and pop filter. Get a boom stand and I recommend closed-back headphones so when you overdub, the earlier tracks won't bleed out of the cups and into the mic. Hope that helps! Ken
