Why is it better to have more than 1 satellite?

Why do some homes have more than 1 satellite dish?

  • I have see homes that have more than 1 dish.. sometimes 3.... 1 from each canadian provider (Bell ExpressVu & StarChoice) and I would assume an American dish. What is the benefit of having 2 Cdn dishes?...if that actually is what they're doing....

    In the US when we get satellite service we often have to have more than one dish. With one sat company we can get two or three satellites with one dish. Depending on the location we might have to put in two separate dishes to see all three satellites. this is just for programs in English. So we might need two dishes to start with to get all the American programming. Now if the customer want International programming from say China, then they need a third dish. So this can be why there is up to three dishes on a roof. At one customers house he already had Internet through another satellite on a separate dish. That house had four dishes on the roof, all working at the same time. If I went up to a house that had a dish on the roof to start with and it was no good to me I would leave it alone, no liability on me if I do not touch it. As in the above case there were two dishes already on the roof before he moved in and they were never taken down. His total was six dishes on the roof. He said he liked it because the neighbors did not like him for that. They said it brought the property value down. I mean we are out in the middle of the woods in a part of the Adirondack Mountains.

When Starchoice & Bell first came out, they offered a trade-in program. All that was available here before them in a small dish,were from the American providers (Dishnet, Direct etc.)-there were still the 10 ft dishes as well. Both Canadian services offered to take the American systems on trade for a new Bell or Starchoice. Then each offered to take the competitions system on trade. Bell would take Starchoice gear from you in return for a new Bell system as did Starchoice, they took the Bell systems. So alot of people would be left with 2 or 3 dishes after this swap. Since then though, they became familiar with programming from one system that wasn't on the other. However, Starchoice & Bell are pretty much the same channels, only offered in different packages. Of course if you have a rental property & they have Starchoice & they rent another room in their house, that could account for the new tenant bringing in his Bell system. Quite common here in a University town. Then again, they could be just hacking out the system & have these dishes to bring in all their channels. i.e.-Pansat If that's still not the reason, you may have to stop & ask why!!

i know that you need different dishes depending on which canels you want.

I have 2 dishes one is old doesn't have local channels but the new one does have local channels. My friend has dish network and directv only because they offer some different channels; she likes an international program that is only available on dish network and not dtv. hopefully that helps
