How do I hook my desktop computer up to my TV set so I can watch movies and TV/shows in the other room?

Computers are generally designed so you MUST use a monitor (less laptops). This is done to increase sales. If your computer can hook to your tv, then when your monitor fails, you can plug to your tv instead of buying a new monitor. Hence, monitor sales drop. However, with some software and hardware, it is possible to route your video output to a tv. The cost of the components outweigh the benifits. Your best bet is to burn your desired media to a dvd/cd and play it in a media player attached to your tv. This is a lot more complicated to achieve than one would think. If your television has a output, probably serial, then it's just a matter of getting a long cable (Radio Shack), but then you won't be able to change channels from the desktop. If you have a cable or satellite box, you can get a signal transmitter and receiver kit and connect them so the video comes to the computer wirelessly, but again, you won't be able to change channels from the computer unless you get another piece of equipment that will boost your TV remote so that it can change channels from another room. and this still may not work depending on how many walls and other sources of interference it has to try to boost the signal through. The transmitter.receiver kit goes for over 350 dollars and the remote booster is extra on top of that.
