You cannot really. You have to break one law or another or violate copyright somehow. For your own DVDs, you have to break the CSS copy protection, and convert from MPEG2 format. Breaking copy protection is a violation of the DMCA, and MPEG2, by rights, requires you pay a license for anything that plays or decodes it. Same for the format you will encode to likely. Any "free" software you may use could be technically illegal because they violate the patents of the MPEG or other organizations/companies. You can record from TV for free with a tuner card on your computer, but may need convert to Zune format. See above for codec legalities. You can download some sorts of content for free, generally public domain stuff.
