How do I burn a DVD with Nero StartSmart?

How do I burn a DVD onto a CD?

  • I have been trying to do so for a long time now and its been rattling my brains trying to figure it out. And before you ask, yes I do have a proper CD that is used to burn DVDs and yes I do use Nero StartSmart (Nero Vision). I get films from BTJunkie and i download them using uTorrent. After the download is complete, I play the DVD in VLC Player to check if its good enough quality and if it is then I proceed onto the burning stage. I place a blank DVD burning CD into the CD Drive (I have two CD drives but only the one recognises the CDs for some reason) and I double click onto Nero StartSmart, go onto Nero Vision and click make a DVD and i import the film that I want to burn onto a disc into the Vision and I either get a message popping up basically saying ''(Name of the film) is not a compatible format for a DVD'' when I just downloaded a crystal clear DVDrip from BTJunkie. Or it burns for about 2 minutes and pops back out and it doesn't let me open it up on the computer because it pops up saying that the CD is unreadable or corrupt and it won't play on any of my DVD players in the house. What am I doing wrong? Am I mean't to convert the file it is in into another compatible format? Should I just keep downloading the same film over and over and hope to get the right one? Help please? xD

There are many different types of DVD rips. So when you say you downloaded a DVD rip that does not narrow the issue enough to give an answer as to your specific issue. Most are in an .avi container and encoded in XviD. They are contained in avi as that greatly reduces the size from a pure DVD rip. An avi can be 700MB, while the pure DVD rip would be over 3GB. They are generally encoded in XviD as these will play in a DivX compatible DVD player (almost all are) without conversion. This means they can be copied as regular data (takes a few minutes) and played on the compatible DVD player. You will see many rips at or around 700MB as these can be burned onto a CD. This is the easiest to get on to the DVD player through burning. You do not have to convert which saves a lot of time. You have to check your DVD player documentation. For example, mine will play XviD, but only on CDs not DVDs.

You mention both CD & DVD, these discs are very different. Make sure you're using a DVD disc, not CD. To burn in Nero Vision the original video should be in AVI, Divx or Mpg format. The file you downloaded might be a DVDRip, but would not be in DVD format, as Jeff explained above. All drives can read both DVD & CD, but not all can write to DVD. Make sure your drive is a DVD burner.

"What am I doing wrong?" You are getting CDs and DVDs mixed up. A CD is an audio only format. You cannot burn a DVD to a CD. If you want to burn a film, you will have to burn it to a DVD, not a CD.
