How can I record DirecTV DVR TiVos onto a DVD?
-
I have the DirecTV DVR and I want to save some of the clips I've TiVoed onto DVD or just save them onto CD, how can I do this?

Answer:
Or you could put Tivo desktop on your computer, transfer the tivo file to your computer through Tivo desktop, convert the tivo file to mpeg with a something called direct dump utility or something like that (google it), then edit and burn to DVD with some movie making software. It's definetely a bit more complicated, but you won't loose any more detail by converting the digital recording to analog and then back to digital.

You need a DVD recorder and a stack of blank DVDs. Connect your DVD recorder to your TV as normal. Now connect your DVD recorder's INPUTs to our DVR's OUTPUTs. Most DVRs have at least 2 sets of outputs, so they can support multiple TVs. Only in this case, your DVD-recorder will be the "other TV". Set your DVD recorder's source to the input where you connected it to the DVR. For instance, on my recorder this is "IN2" - your model may be different, check your manual. Now set your TV to the input where your DVD recorder is connected. You should now see the output from your DVR on the TV, but also be able to see the DVD Recorder's on-screen-display as well. Setup is now complete. When you're ready to record, pop in a blank DVD, and set the recorder to the DVR's input. Start watching the show you wish to record as normal on your DVR. Hit the Record button on the DVD recorder. That's all there is to it. Note: the DVD recorder will record whatever you do on the DVR - so you can't watch 1 show and record another one to DVD. You may also want to hit the pause button on the DVD recorder when the commercials come on. This way you can fast-forward through those without recording them. This allows you to fit a standard 30 minute show into only 22 minutes on your DVD. When the show is finished, hit the Stop button on the DVD recorder. When the disc is full, you need to Finalize it. See your DVD Recorder's manual for details on how to do this. Once finalized, you cannot use that DVD for recording anymore, but it will be playable on any DVD standard DVD player.
