How do I get out of my cable contract with Direct Tv?

Do I have to rent a cable box from Time Warner Cable to get all the channels?

  • I currently have a cable box, but my TV has a built in tuner so I was wondering if I could get rid of my box and directly connect the coaxial cable to the TV. My question is, will I be able to see all the channels that I would normally have be able to, when viewing with out the cable box? Or is there somewhere in the contract that if you purchase their service you must also rent their box to receive all channels? Thanks!

    You could most definitely get rid of your cable box and keep standard cable but you will NOT receive all the channels that you received on the cable box. Depending on where you are you would receive around channels 2-78 with standard cable. Also we dont offer contracts unless you subscribe to a price lock guarantee- So you can add/remove cable boxes as often as you would like. Also if you have a hi-definition television you will not receive the HD channels that normally come with the cable box- you will be able to pick up the format if there are programs on standard cable that say offered in HI-definition. You may be able to receive encrypted channels with your TV. To get encrypted channels, you need something which can decrypt the channels, and be controlled by the provider so it can be told what channels it is allowed to decrypt. That means you need a cable box from them, or a cablecard (from them) that works in a cablecard ready cable tuner. It is not really contractual, but the nature of pay TV providers that you need their box or other to get their pay channels, although your contract may have language that prohibits connection of unauthoized devices to their network.
