Can transfer movies from my DirectTv DVR to my computer or hard drive?

I have a dvr through directv, someone told me it's possible to get the recordings off the dvr and put them on to an external hard drive or on to my pc, is this possible, if so, how?

Answer:
The only way to do it is with a video capture card on your computer. You would have to hook the output of the DVR to the input of the video capture card and record the program on the computer as you play it back on the DVR. There is no way to just transfer it from the DVR disk to the computer disk by copying or otherwise transferring the digital file from the DVR to your computer.
