What is a Good DVR card for digital surveillance recording?

What is the difference between a video capture card and a DVR card?

  • I've been researching and hammering away at Google, but still can't find this out. I'm trying to set up a wireless home surveillance system using an old PC, but sites will either tell me that I need a video capture card to interface the cameras with and record video to the hard drive, while others tell me about DVR cards to do pretty much the same thing. I'm still trying to find out how wireless DVR cameras connect to a card that clearly has BNC or RCA plugs sticking out of them. Would either card do the same thing as the other? I know there is a crucial difference between the two types of cards, but nobody is saying what it is.

  • Answer:

Usually, a "DVR Card" includes a tuner, while a "video capture card" does not. The later is what you want, as it will be cheaper, since you're not needing a tuner (i.e., for recording TV).

capture card requires a computer to work. it connects by pci insert card or by usb connection dvr cards plug directly into the pci slot of the computer then there is dvr / pvr that work as stand alone device without a computer. ones like the tristar mx home theater dvr connect to cameras and can be a surveillance system
